CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LOWER SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FOR A GREAT MEET!

There will be two other meets for Lower School students:

The Latin School meet is Wednesday October 4th in Lincoln Park for 3rd and 4th graders, plus Middle School students. Our students will run at 4:15.

The Chiaravalle Montessori Cross Country Meet, Sunday, October 15th, at Elliot Park in Evanston with Grades 1 & 2 running at 8:00 a.m., and 3rd & 4th running at 8:15 a.m.

LEADERSHIP WEEK September 25-29 is next week.  This is the week we really focus on what it takes to be a good leader through our LEADER IN ME program. The teachers have many fun activities planned for the children that stress Stephen Covey's Seven Habits.  We then continue to focus on them all year!

Put this important evening on your calendar! We hope to see you Tuesday, October 3, 2017. It is PREVIEW NIGHT.  This is the night you get to meet your children's teachers for next year and hear all about the exciting curriculum, projects and activities that they are planning for them. We are all so proud of our amazing faculty and I know you will be too.

Put October 20 on your calendar: It is PUMPKIN CARVING NIGHT
This is one of Lower School's favorite events.  We all have dinner, choose a pumpkin, carve a wonderful jack-o-lantern, and enjoy each others' company. Watch for more information!

There is a planning meeting on Tuesday morning right after drop off in the EDP Room.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

1. The Junior Kindergarteners are studying Johnny Appleseed and the life cycle of an apple.

2. Look below for more pictures from the XC Meet.

3. Look who came to visit us at recess!  The our student leaders spotted this hawk and helped me enhance the picture, so you can see it.

 4. As part of their interest based reading group, some of the students read a book about "copycats". The book talked about a girl who everyone wanted to copy.  She said she was going to shave her head, but did not! But the other children who wanted to copy her, did!  The children made books of the story, with the last page being a picture of themselves bald!!

It was so nice to see you all at Miniature School.  This is one of my favorite evenings at Roycemore where you meet our fabulous faculty and hear about our challenging and differentiated curriculum, all the specials your children enjoy and The Leader in Me Program.

PICTURE DAY, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
All children and classes will be having their pictures taken on Tuesday.  You should have received information at Miniature School of how to purchase them.  All Lower School students will have their pictures taken in the morning.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.
1. Children don't always need to sit at desks to learn.  Research is showing that working where they are comfortable usually produces better results.

2. As part of our Leader in Me Program, Annette O'Donnell, our Lower School art teacher, chose "Leaders in Art" as her theme this year.  For their first art project, the students are going through a process creating themselves as super leaders!

3. Third Graders learn from the world around them.  Because of Hurricane Irma, they learned about hurricanes and created hurricane art.

   4. Our Pre-kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten children who stay all day,  are so lucky to have the opportunity to be in a nap room or a non-nap room.  Children who need a nap, get a nap in a quiet room. Children who have given up their naps have a rest and then participate in fun stations or centers. Every child is engaged and not bored.

We had a fabulous opening of school.  The children are happy, excited to see their friends, and are working diligently. Our new Head of School Mrs. Adrianne Finley Odell spoke to the student body at our Opening of School Assembly with some truly inspiring words

The first through fourth graders celebrated by having a student scavenger hunt on Friday afternoon, which was really an excuse to enjoy each others' company and enjoy a special treat of fruit salad.

All the children in Lower School received a new Roycemore t-shirt on Friday.  Please have your children wear it on all field trips.

See the pictures below of many of the classes, recess, and of course from Friday afternoon.  Early childhood had a lot fun at school, so look for their pictures too.

MINIATURE SCHOOL: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7
Thursday evening, September 7 is Miniature School.  It is a wonderful way to meet your children's teachers and learn how you and the school can partner to help your children excel.  You will be receiving an invitation. Lower School Parents will gather in the MPR at 5:45 to hear a welcome  from our Head of School Adrianne Finley Odell.  Then there will be visits to the classroom and special teachers.  Childcare is available all evening.

THE LEADER IN ME
We are in our third year of the Leader in Me program.  It is a very positive social, emotional learning program based on Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.
The goal of the Leader in Me is for students to understand that they all have the essential qualities to  become leaders.  The Leader in Me also helps to create a common language within our school by teaching the students the Seven Habits. We will be also showing how the Seven Habits and our School Core Values of Scholarship, Integrity, Respect, Community and Compassion complement each other.

Teachers will be teaching the Seven Habits, imbedding them in their lessons and hopefully encouraging all the children to know that they can be leaders and do what is right.    It is a truly positive message that each child is a leader. The following is a quick overview, but they really encompass much more.

The Seven Habits:
Habit 1: Be Proactive • You're in Charge
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind• Have a Plan
Habit 3: Put First Things First • Work First, Then Play
Habit 4: Think Win-Win • Everyone Can Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood• Listen Before You Talk
Habit 6: Synergize • Together Is Better
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw • Balance Feels Best

Your teachers will be talking about this program in more depth on Thursday evening.
