Many parents have heard me talk of how Roycemore is a great progressive school, but also pragmatic, making sure kids are taught what they need to know.  This week's blog highlights that.  For the progressive side, please look at the 2nd Grade Rube Goldberg machines they created using the Design Thinking Process as a culmination of their unit on Simple Machines.  They are truly works of art!  At the same time, being pragmatic, our 3rd graders are learning to keyboard, which will certainly help them when they need to write multi-page papers going forward.

ADMISSIONS' MORNING: Tuesday, January 30 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. If you know someone who would like to see our excellent school in progress. Please invited them to come. They can pre-register by contacting Amanda Avery, Director of Admissions (aavery@roycermoreschool.org). Of course, walk-ins are always welcome.

ROYCEMORE SCHOOL'S TWO EXCELLENT SUMMER PROGRAMS, INSPIRATION FACTORY (IF)  AND CAMP GRIFFIN INFORMATION IS ON OUR WEBSITE!.  PLEASE LOOK FOR IT.    https://www.roycemoreschool.org/summer
(Did you notice our new names?)

Also this year, Inspiration Factory will have an Extended Day Option to 6:00pm.  Registration will begin on February 1.

CONFERENCES: Conferences will take place on Wednesday, February 14, Thursday, February 15, and Friday February 16.  Please put these dates on your calendars.  You will be receiving an email from Sign-Up Genius shortly for you to reserve the times you want. Please remember because of conferences, there is no school on Friday, February 16. EDP is not available.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

1.  Be sure to look at the clay looms with weavings that are on the bulletin board across from the elevator that students in Grades 1-4 made in their art classes.  I know you will be impressed!

  2. Second graders showed off their simple machine creations today: the challenge was to use devices like Archimedes screws, ramps and catapults to help elves who work in a bakery but struggle to get their materials (eggs, flour and milk) into the mixing bowl due to their small size. Students found the perfect combination of physics and imagination.

 3. The 1st Grade study of Ancient Egypt has led them to discovering the Rosetta Stone, the invention of paper, and translating their names into hieroglyphics.  They took on the role of ancient scribes and created cartouche, to show their names in this ancient language.

4. The Kindergarten has become an ocean!

  5.  Here a third grader is practicing keyboarding, which will help them as they progress in school.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

   1. One of the wonderful parts of being in a school with all ages is the interaction that our youngest children have with the older ones. Here are the Junior Kindergarteners with their 3rd Grade reading buddies. Many Middle School students also are reading buddies to the youngest children.

     2. The Pre-Kindergarten are studying polar bears! They are even doing math with polar bears.

  3. An update on the Rube Goldberg machines, the Second Graders are making using Design Thinking. See more at the bottom of the blog.

   4. The Middle Schoolers participate in an exciting program called Personal Passion Projects (P3).  They each choose a project based on something that they want to learn. They worked with coaches and mentors and on Friday, had an Expo to show off what they had produced. They focused on many different subjects, from animation, to coding and 3D printing, to how birds fly and migrate, to tie-dying. The projects were so varied and amazing! The Lower School students loved seeing all of the projects.

They even get help doing their homework!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and stayed warm.  We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday, January 8.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

  1. The whole school celebrated Wassail on the last day of school before Winter Break. Upper School and Middle School students buddied with our Lower School children to make blankets for Project Lianus.  It was truly a lovely way to end 2017.

    2.  The Pre-Kindergartners and the Junior Kindergartners made gingerbread cookies, but then they "ran away", and the children had to go on a hunt to find them.

3.  The Kindergarteners had their traditional car show to culminate their unit on transportation.  They created cars out of recyclable materials and then presented their creations to their parents and the other children in Lower School.

Each week I will list all the activities that we offer, but do know that sometimes, some of them will not go.  Please check them to see which ones are going that week.
