Screening - Most Likely to Succeed
Wednesday February 28 at 6:00 pm
Roycemore School will host a screening of the film- Most Likely to Succeed, a thought-provoking documentary feature film that reveals the growing shortcomings of conventional education methods in today's innovative world, on February 28 at 6:00 pm. This is to kick-off our conversations for NextGen Roycemore and what the school should be considering in the years ahead to prepare our young people for the rapidly changing world they are entering. All faculty, staff, students and parents are welcome. Childcare will be available ($10) and pizza, popcorn and drinks will be available. View a trailer of the film.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

COMMUNITY SERVICE is alive and well at Roycemore. The Upper School Community Service Organization is partnering with Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM) who is partnering with Cradles to Crayons as its primary beneficiary. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization in Chicago that provides children age 0 through 12 living in low income and at risk situations with the essential items that they need to thrive - at home, at school, and at play. They provide these items by connecting communities that have with communities that need.

How Roycemore is partnering is to host a donation drive for Cradles to Crayons. We are collecting new and gently used clothes, toys, books, and more. These items will then be taken to Cradles to Crayons' "Giving Factory", where volunteers will sort the items into "KidPacks" of personalized, essential items, which they can then distribute to partner organizations. It only takes $33 to create one KidPack - if you would like to further support the mission of Cradles to Crayons, please consider donating at give.nudm.org.

LUNAR NEW YEAR: All Roycemore students will celebrate the Lunar New Year on Wednesday, February 21! This year, we will host two visiting Chinese artists: a puppeteer and a dough figurine artist. Students will visit these artists at different times throughout the day, to learn from them and complete activities.

PICTURES THIS WEEK: I will be putting a lot of pictures on the blog at different places, but there will always be more at the bottom of the blog.

 1. The Pre-Kindergarten had so much fun as they learned about primary and secondary colors. They all knew which were which. They put their hands in paint and made a collage of all the colors the primary colors make.  When asked what red and blue make, they all answered "PURPLE!"

2.  It is so wonderful for our little ones because they get to interact with so many of the older students.  That is what is makes Roycemore special!

3.  There is nothing better than recess in the snow!

Because of our snow day, Spirit Week Formal Day will happen on Monday.

CONFERENCES: Conferences will take place on Wednesday, February 14, Thursday, February 15, and Friday February 16.  Please put these dates on your calendars.  You should have received an email from Sign-Up Genius for you to reserve the times you want. Please let me know if you did not.  Please remember because of conferences, there is no school on Friday, February 16. EDP is not available. Also many of the clubs will not meet this week.  Please scroll down to see which are meeting.

VALENTINES DAY
We will be celebrating Valentines Day on Wednesday, February 14th. While your child is welcome to bring in valentines for each of their classmates, we are asking you to not attach or pass out candy along with the valentines.

Instead, the students will get the opportunity to have a snack during a Valentines Day party at the end of the day. We are looking for parent volunteers to bring in food for this party. Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 will be attending the party, so there will be about 65 children to feed. Please click on this link to view the sign-up if you would like to volunteer to bring in some food for the party. Please note that if you sign-up to bring food for one of the listed categories, you should plan on bringing in enough for 12 servings. There are multiple sign-ups spots available in each category. Most of the slots are full, but we still need a few people.
If you volunteer to bring in food, please plan on brining it in on Wednesday, February 14th. Please bring it to my office. If you would like to volunteer to be at the party and help feed the children, please let me know.  Thank you!!

1. As part of their study of Egypt, the 1st graders were learning about pharaohs.  Their level of engagement was extraordinary.

  2. Technology is used in Lower School.  The students, starting in Grade 2, learn keyboarding skills on Chrome Books to help them moving forward. All of the students also use them in a variety of ways.  The Fourth Graders are creating state projects and doing their research in books and on the internet.

  3. As you walk around Lower School, check out all the Black History Month displays.

4. Our early childhood children who stay all day may be in a nap room or a non-nap room.  This is wonderful for children who need to sleep and for children who have given up their naps.  Everyone is being appropriately served.

Each week I will list all the activities that we offer, but do know that sometimes, some of them will not go.  Please check them to see which ones are going that week.
